Reservations

Oh dear, two music posts in a row, sorry.

Nipped up to the Shepherd's Bush Empire last night to see Jeff Tweedy of arty alt-country band Wilco fame play an acoustic solo gig.

All a bit odd, since I was introduced to Wilco by One Who Shall Not Be Named, with the result that their superb Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album more or less became the soundtrack to my marriage break-up. So, not much I really want to dwell on there, except to note in passing that the boy Tweedy is almost as good a stand-up comedian as he is a singer-songwriter, and that the stunning I Am Trying To Break Your Heart sounds all the better for being stripped of all the noise and distortion that surrounds it on the album.

Oh, and someone collapsed halfway through, which I thought was a pretty rock 'n' roll thing to do at a quiet acoustic gig.

On the plus side Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is a fantastic album - their last decent one by far.

And glad to see Elaine Lordan was there.

It is indeed, W.

And I had to look up Elaine Lordan. I'm not sure I should actually be doing a Popular Culture MA.

Ooh, I haven't listened to any Wilco for a couple of years. Now I can't wait to get home and dig some out.

Thank you for reminding me!

Glad to be of service, Donna. Also, welcome!

Wilco is cool, Jeff is cooler. Would have loved to be there. Sorry that I will not be in London on December 1st. That's a little too far away for me. Too far I just can't see. I think that's from the Dire Straits. Hello from your blogging buddy Konrad

Ah, the lovely Konrad. I thought Wilco might be your sort of thing, actually. And maybe we could have the next blog meeting in Germany - oo, like a cultural exchange...

*patroclus proceeds to get carried away to the point of delirium*

luwuuwxl - I don't know, but it's a brilliant word. Maybe the title of the next Boards of Canada album?

Damn you Wyndham (in a friendly sort of way). I was going to make the Elaine Lourdan gag. I didn't think any of pat's other groupies could possibly be as naff as me in their viewing habits. But I was wrong.

I was glued to "I'm A Celebrity..." last year, if it's any consolation. These days I don't watch any TV, because I've become too tragically internet-fixated even to move into the living room.

qtubus - a sort of tiny monster you get in your nightmares, which gets into your trachea and....makes a horrible glistening web in there, or something.

Did they collapse or fall asleep?

patroclus said...

They fell asleep very suddenly by the bar. Falling asleep is the new stage-diving, dontcha know.
