Song Of The Week

In true local radio stylee, I'm dedicating this one to all my fellow mopy Green Wing fans who were less than pleased with the way the series ended last night. Don't worry everyone, all will be alright come the Christmas episode. I hope.

This song has got nothing to do with GW, but it *is* a lovely bit of uplifting indie-psych-pop from Grandaddy, whose entire now-finished career has inexplicably passed me by until this very moment:

Grandaddy - Elevate Myself (mp3) - courtesy of Everybody Cares

And just for Tamburlaine:

Grandaddy - Where I'm Any More (mp3) - courtesy of Bows + Arrows

Also, please welcome new additions to the ever-expanding blogroll: one-woman (although I could be wrong on both those counts) media empire Ceridwen Devi, and fellow W12 resident Oye Billy! Go visit, make friends, prosper.

I too did not love the ending of Green Wing. But I did love Caroline's dress/wrap/shoe combo right at the end.

I made a cup of tea at the crucial moment - is Mac going to die??

Thanks for the tunes by the way, much appreciated.

I don't know, Annie, but for the sake of integrity and closure and Christmas cheer and whatnot, I'm banking on a happy ending. Whatever that might entail.

Also I spent most of the episode typing 'noooo!' and 'ffs' to fellow aficionados on MSN, so I think I was only actually watching the screen for about half of it. I am totally rubbish at watching telly.

I think I ought to grudgingly admit that I think that episode ended quite well. I say grudgingly because my poor little broken heart would only have been truly satisfied with a happy ending, but I suppose all things considered, the episode was actually quite good.
I guess it was easier for the writers to conceive of such awful things happening to the characters as they were the beings who created them. Unlike us mortals who fall in love with these creations.

I cant believe I just said "all things considered the episode was quite good". That is so wrong. The episode was VERY good/excellent/bordering on the divine, I meant to say. I guess my inner feelings are still in tatters.

Cheers for the link!

You can't go wrong with Grandaddy, what with those beards and malfunctioning old style keyboards.

I saw them once and this guy in the audience kept trying to sell me poppers. Most strange.

I have been having nightmares about the last episode for the last two nights. I am not a Mac-fancier, but it's all too dreadfully dreadful - I have also had dreadful cliff-tumbling dreams. I really do hope that this doesn't keep happening until Christmas.

It was, of course, a fabulous, fabulous episode, especially Sue White's birth experience.

know what else is creepy? The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas are also some of my favorite films.

having said that, you -own- the final Grandaddy album in question, so i am just a little jealous of you. *sulks*

Pals, I hope this doesn't mean I am not a 'true' GW fan, but I really was all back to normal by Sunday evening. Watching Dr Who and the remarkable Funland (you'd love it pat), Watford getting into the Premiership, packing for Thursday's holiday departure, singing some Monteverdi all helped dispel the Friday clouds.

I realise that I'm not actually bothered if Mac dies. Sorry. But it's just that my sense of injustice was provoked by the 'wrong' pairing at the end.

patroclus said...

Ahh, no worries cello, the emotional trauma of Friday evening has now passed - although I resorted to the Dukes of Stratosphear rather than Monteverdi.

I think I saw the first episode of Funland a few months ago in France. It seemed appreciably dark, filthy and grotesque (isn't it from the same people that did League of Gentlemen?) Not the kind of thing you really want to watch with your Mum, as I did...

Thanks for the link and the empire.

Hmm -- From the woman who introduced me to Calexico, had to give it a try. Not bad, but I think of this kind of stuff as bedsit synthesiser. This is what killed drummers ...

Keep meaning to buy some Grandaddy, as I only have "Underneath the weeping willow", which was on a magazine freebie CD some time ago, and which is utterly lovely.

Sorry I can't join in with the Green Wing comments as I have never watched it (gasp!).

DaveF: Yes, Calexico wouldn't have been much good for cheering up distressed GW fans. I don't think drummers are an endangered species quite yet, though. Or perhaps there's just a preponderance of them in my little world, Nibus and Interpreter Pavlov included!

Tamburlaine: I shall put up another mp3 link just for you. Don't go away now!

patroclus said...

Ah yes, I knew what you meant, but I phrased my answer all wrong. Glad you liked the Calexico stuff, though!

Elevate myself. What a lovely tune. Thank you.

It was my pleasure, Rafael.
