Song Of The Week!

And on the strength of just half a listen, too - six and a half utterly fabulous minutes of glorious psychedelic madness on the subject of elaborate millinery*. Stick with it, for it is awesome:

Pepe Deluxe
Ms Wilhelmina and Her Hat
(12MB file, but totally worth it)

[Buy from Amazon]

Ooh, I never want this song to end!

* Or possibly, having now listened to it about 80 times, elaborate millinery as an elaborate metaphor for something really quite rude. Still awesome, though.

I forgot I was downloading this and started playing Warcraft. About ten minutes later it started playing, which confused me somewhat, as I thought the game had gone a bit esoteric.

I like it.

I think you may well be right about the elaborate metaphor for something rude...

I remember once playing a song called Rapture by the band Pedro the Lion on a show on a Christian radio station. I thought it might have some religious significance, plus it was a great tune.

I didn't listen to it properly before I played it on air. I should have as the 'rapture' it was referring to was of a sexual nature....

Oops.

Great tune though.

I know, Nine-Tenths. Sometimes I wish pop bands would just write songs that are *actually* about hats and space travel and stuff, instead of just being euphemisms for pubic hair and heroin and stuff.

Absolutely.
Maybe the Campaign for Real Lyrics should start here....

Although, I did get a pathetic kick out the image of the odd stuffy Christian sputtering into their tea while listening to the radio.
"Wait a mnute, this song isn't about the pre-millenial return of the Messiah - its about adulterous sex in a hotel room!"

Yes, looking at those lyrics I can see what you mean. Still, full marks to the chappie for having the presence of mind to notice that the room was equipped with a Bible.

I can't say that the presence or otherwise of a Bible has ever had a material effect on any of my sexual experiences, but there you go - I am clearly an unredeemable heathen.

Pedro the Lion are* a Christian rock band, aren't they? Or kind of religious at least?

Anyway, good to see you and Mr BC the other day :) Erm, commiserations and apologies if either of you got my cold, though...

As for that Hat song, it really does sound like something straight out of the 60s... Great stuff. Ooh, just spotted they're giving away their previous album as mp3s: here.

*Or should that be 'is'? I can never remember.

As far as I'm aware, Pedro the Lion's lead singer David Bazan often sung about religion and politics. But I'm afraid I don't know much about his personal beliefs.

I love the Pedro the Lion stuff, but it was unfortunately never accepted as part of the US Christian/religious mainstream. Mainly due to his tendency to say what he really thought about things!

Its sad they don't really exist anymore although Bazan's solo stuff is excellent as is his output with Headphones (the sort of band he's in with Frank Lenz of Starflyer 59 fame)

OPC: It was lovely (as ever) to see you too! I too noticed and downloaded the free album, but a fatal lethargy set in and I haven't got round to listening to it yet. Am planning to get the new one, though.

Nine-Tenths: Out of interest, what kind of music *is* accepted by the US Christian mainstream, or do they have their own bands that no one else really knows about?
