There's Such A Thing As Too Much Self-Awareness

INT. BLUE CAT TOWERS - EVENING

PATROCLUS and JAMES BLUE CAT are sitting in companionable silence. Eventually:

MR BC: What are you thinking about?

ME: I was just mentally going through everyone who follows me on Twitter, and imagining all the ways in which I disappoint, annoy or otherwise fail to meet the expectations of each and every one of them.

MR BC: Crikey.

ME: Why, what are you thinking about?

MR BC: Goblins.

How different, how very different from the home life of our own dear Queen.

Ooh, where does that come from now?

An unidentified lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria, having seen Antony and Cleopatra, is said to have exclaimed, "How different, how very different from the home life of our own dear Queen!"

You don't disappoint me on twitter because I am not on it.

You could never disappoint me, darling; you're simply perfect. Neither could Mr BC, because my expectations of his are so low. Goblins, indeed. The very idea.

'Companionable silence' is beautifully succinct. I've always wondered what to call that kind of silence. Now I know.

I remain wretchedly undisappointed.

I don't do Twitter either, but I assure you that when a new Quinquireme appears in my newsreader, I always jump to it, thinking, "Ah, now we'll have something good."

I forgot to mention, this reminds me greatly of a very early Saturday Night Live (about the only funny thing I remember from that relentlessly overhyped show). A young man and young lady are making out on a couch, and after breaking a particularly prolonged clinch, he asks her:

"What are you thinking of, dearest?" [or words to that effect]

She replies, sweetly:

"Warthogs."

-- followed by a jump cut to a grassy field full of them.

...so basically what you are saying is that you were both thinking about the same thing.

How romantic!

You are the perfect couple. Although you know he should really have been thinking about trolls..

you were both thinking about the same thing as it's the goblins who make the little words appear on your computer screen, and when they drink all the wine, bugger up the operating system.
Or maybe that's just here chez Smat

And why, pray, was Mr BC thinking about goblins!

I started to have much the same thought about my Twitter followers, but then I realised that those that know me are used to it, and the rest have only got themselves to blame.

As for that question, what are you thinking about?

For the record - never disappointed. PS: When I was small my brothers used to call me goblinhead.

Wow sometimes you gotta love blokes - so simple. I've often wondered if being simple would make my life easier..
