I'm sorry - must disagree in part. The U.S. version of "Life on Mars" sucks beyond the telling of it.
Happy '09 to you!
Lots of fun for you to look forward to in 2009! Love, peace and happiness to you all - and all your readers.
yes yes yes happy new years yes YOU ARE SO WRONG ABOUT AMERICAN TELEVISION oh my god I cannot tell you. get down on your KNEES and thank whatever god you own that you have the bbc. seriously.
except for mythbusters. thats good.
XOO! and an extra x for the bluekitten!
And a merry new year to you.
Ooh I like the sound of no 5 very much. And agree wholeheartedly about US telly, although I am not including US versions of UK shows in that assessment.
The telly thing was a bit disingenuous: both countries are capable of making really awful television and really great television. But the TV programmes I enjoyed in 2008 were mainly American: Mad Men, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars and Boston Legal to name but a few. The British programmes that I watched - Doctor Who, Survivors, Merlin, Torchwood, Bonekickers - all seemed terribly facile and immature by comparison.
I think Doctor Who is utter wank. Compared to some of the better US sci-fi shows, it looks like a low budget panto.
Agree entirely about US vs UK - there's so much high quality stuff coming out of the states these days and so little coming from the UK.
I am planning a post on why I think I like Torchwood, which I realize is, in some objective sense, utter drivel.
We only watch TV retrospectively on Netflix; that said, Battlestar Galactica is good television. Doctor Who has so far been awesome campy fun, but we haven't gotten to the Dreadful Companion yet. Still, in general, if it's comedy I want, American television is of no use.
I am looking forward to another wonderful year of your blog, which is better than TV any time.
You did pick a very un-representative sample of excellent US telly. You might also like "Wonderfalls" and "Dead Like Me," two shows that had all-too-short shelf lives, but are available on DVD.
But my taste may be suspect, as I do enjoy the rompy, campy wankitude of Who and Torchwood.
Re. 6: in a doomed effort to prolong the inevitable I'm just going to pretend to assume you're damning with faint praise...
